JV North hosts workshop events to help members address key homebuilding challenges

JV North is holding a series of workshop events to help members navigate five key challenges facing homebuilding.

The next takes place on Tuesday 12 April and is an industry-facing ‘sounding board’ forum focusing on how sector specialists can support the consortium’s members to advance MMC and net zero.

It will see a selection of the companies successfully appointed to the MMC lot in JV North’s £560 million framework sharing their experiences and delivery challenges.

Set up in January following a comprehensive review into the biggest issues facing organisations developing new properties, JV North’s Task and Finish Group sees members receive expert guidance and the chance to share best practice, data and intelligence in a series of forums.

The project is directed by Jayne Lomas of Saffer Cooper Consultancy which manages JV North’s development programme that sees members building over 4,000 properties in the 2021/26 Affordable Homes Programme.

The Task and Finish Group sessions focus on JV North’s response to:

  1. Fire Safety Act 2021 and Building Safety Bill 2022 changes;
  2. Striving for net zero and making carbon reductions;
  3. Planning for forthcoming changes to Building Regulations and Future Home Standards;
  4. Delivering modern methods of construction (MMC) homes at scale while improving efficiency, quality of design and standards;
  5. Employers’ requirements updates.

The Task and Finish Group has already completed its work on Building Regulations and Future Home Standards with a comprehensive report and factsheet created.

This included pragmatic advice regarding the future use of gas fires to guide members in their work and separate reports will follow on the Building Safety Bill and Home User Guides.

Subsequent events will cover One Manchester’s recent experience delivering Stoney Gate, a Passivhaus standard development and Stockport Homes will host a session on the challenges of the Building Safety Bill.

Saffer Cooper Consultancy’s Jayne Lomas said: “Bringing together experts to share their experience over a series of events will be invaluable for JV North members as all are facing the same, multitude of hugely important challenges.

“The next event focusing on MMC and net zero will see specialist contractors explore and scope new approaches of working together with members by discussing contractual arrangements and payment protocols and how they can better consider defect risks and liabilities.

“Important topics such as employers’ requirement issues will also be discussed and we will develop profile fact sheets about framework contractors to give JV North members more information and details of their experience delivering MMC schemes.”

Other events being held by the Group include a Building Safety Forum on 21st April and a Home User Guide forum on 26th April.

Further dates are due to be announced for lunchtime networking sessions for JV North members, which will cover procuring volumetric schemes, embedding building and fire safety in development processes, customers and home technologies and introducing new companies and technologies.
