Data benchmarking helps JV North members navigate housebuilding landscape

Results from JV North’s data collection week have been shared with consortium members to help their decision-making and build more affordable homes.

JV North ran the benchmarking exercise so the most up-to-date insight of the current financial and operating environments can be taken into consideration in members’ development programmes.

All 14 consortium members took part, providing data and information on the following topics:

  1. Current tender prices
  2. Contractor exposure
  3. Payment of contractor invoices
  4. Development salaries
  5. Risk register
  6. Development appraisal parameters
  7. Social rent calculation

Once collated, JV North’s housebuilding management consultancy, Saffer Cooper, pooled the results and shared secure data sets with members anonymously giving them wider insight into what is happening across the North West.

Analysis of contractor exposure, for example, lets each member know how much work each building company has, with which members, costs, the locations and project completion dates.

It also allows members to share recent experiences of on-site performance.

Chair of JV North, John Bowker, said: “Our annual data benchmarking week lets us compare information, spot trends and opportunities and be aware of potential risks as a collective.

“It is invaluable to our members because it gives them wider context of the very challenging and competitive housebuilding marketplace where they operate.

“Being able to analyse the sector in greater depth using a combination of relevant data along with recent first-hand personal experiences is vital as we embark on building in the region of 3,000 homes in the next four years.”
